DescriptionPear (1987) is a unique piece that includes the frame as part of the final painted design. Using oil paints on canvas for the center of the piece and blending the frame into the work itself, Brian Bomeisler twists the usual expectations of the physical parts of the painting. Even the work itself, a simple picture of a pear with an arch above it, gives the conceptual edges some foundation in a classical depiction of fruit.The act of painting the frame is not a common one either, with the major artist who worked with them being Georges Seurat, painter of A Sunday Afternoon of the Island of La Grande Jatte. He often extended his compositions onto the frame as Bomeisler does with his painting, Pear.
Graduating from the Pratt Institute with his BFA, Brian Bomeisler has been working in New York City ever since, his work is present in the collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego. Through the 1990’s, he worked with artist and author Betty Edwards, teaching art classes from the perspective of her book, Drawing from the Right Side of the Brain. Since then he has continued teaching and working in Soho, New York.
