DescriptionUntitled (2 Green Chairs) shows a simple image of a background streaked with color, in front of which sit two green and speckled chairs. A horizon line divides the bottom third from the upper two, even cutting through the chairs as if the viewer were looking at them from two different vantage points. The painting’s surface, in spite of its simple appearance, is marked with brushstrokes and paint layers to create the picture’s texture and even limited depth. This can be seen especially in the layering of color in the lower shadows of the piece and in the small stripes of yellow with grey painted right on top. In the upper division’s chair shadows the brush texture does all of the work in communicating the kind of depth and texture of the space as well.
While simple at first glance, the painting reveals, through its paint, a kind of texture and dynamic quality that belies the initial simplicity of form, space, and narrative.
A member of the Buster Levi Gallery in New York, Tim D’Acquisto is a representational artist with an interest in the ironic. He tends to focus on the picture plane itself and very subtle metaphors that do not always have the benefit of explanation. Color and form make up the majority of D’Acquisto’s interest in regard to metaphor, content, and irony all at once. All of this serves to make his work enigmatic, thoughtful, and even mysteriously expressive.
