DescriptionRoughly textured concrete is the first thing to catch the eye of the viewer when it comes to Arche-Hype 10, this 1989 painting by Mariano Del Rosario. Across the whole canvas, which appears to have painted stripes on all sides, concrete has been spread to cover almost everything. On the rough gray concrete surface there are a few painted shapes as well, though the ones most emphasized are the black and white dots that have a line drawn to them from the very top of the painting. There is also a rectangular shape just off-center made of 3 striped lines of dark red, gray, and red.

However, the shapes seem to exist on the surface to emphasize the rough and chaotic nature of the concrete around them, which varies in thickness and in the visibility of the brush strokes that were used to apply it. Rosario’s interest in the physics and contrast drive the work as the texture of the concrete and its application are emphasized with greater importance than the rest of the shapes and colors.

Mariano Del Rosario is a Filipino-American painter and installation artist who lives in Brooklyn, New York. He holds a MFA degree in painting from Maryland Institute College of Art and a BFA degree in painting from the University of the Philippines. His work is inspired by contemporary art movements of the 1960’s such as Process art, as well as influence from his interests in physics and eastern philosophy. He currently works in Brooklyn, New York.
