DescriptionAn artist known for her immersive installation art, Judy Pfaff emphasizes the experiential in all of her work, imbuing her smaller scale sculpture, drawings, paintings, and prints with equal intensity. Pfaff strives to give life to her sculptures and installations so that they do not become flattened art objects, but rather work in concert with the spatial elements of the surrounding environment. With Petite Theatre, Pfaff actualizes these relationships between the sculpture and its space with varying pyramidal shapes and contrasting formal elements. Pfaff stresses a way of seeing and not thinking, reaching for what she refers to as a ?visual intelligence? in her work.Judy Pfaff moved from her birthplace of London, England to the United States at the age of thirteen, where she would go on to attend Cass Technical High School and, briefly, Wayne State University, receiving a BFA from Washington University in 1971 and an MFA from Yale University in 1973. In addition to her role as a professor of art at Bard College, where she has been teaching since 1994, Pfaff continues to coordinate and participate in solo and group shows.
