DescriptionThis massive sculpture takes its title from the word ‘lieu’ or ‘place’ and signifies a physical reality. No element of the sculpture is square with any other, providing a sense of motion even to this firmly grounded work.

Robert Schefman was born in Detroit, earned a BFA from Michigan State University, and an MFA from the University of Iowa. He lived and worked in New York City for fourteen years and returned to the Detroit area in 1990, and served on faculty at the College for Creative Studies until 2020.

Trained as a sculptor, Schefman began producing large-scale highly realistic figurative paintings as a way to build a narrative into his work. This monumental minimalist steel sculpture reflect work done early in his career. His work can be found in numerous private and public collections including The Broad Museum of Art, The Mint Museum of Art, The Detroit Institute of Arts and The Boca Raton Museum of Art.
