DescriptionThe spontaneous yet harmonious composition found in Jonathan Waite’s Joys of Youth echoes a liveliness found in youth itself. The bright and bold colors add to this sensation. As an artist of the Cass Corridor movement of the 1960s and 70s, Waite’s art shows an evolution of imagination and experimentation. His later artwork moved from modernist themes to organic forms and compositions as represented in Joys of Youth. His paintings often come off as surreal yet introspective and a personal allegory that can be found in each.

Waite received his BFA and MA from the University of Iowa, and his MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art. He taught at Wayne State University and later served as Visual Arts Chairman Emeritus at Poly Prep Country Day School, making his teaching career expand over 32 years.
