DescriptionA native of Findlay, Ohio, James Chatelain came to Detroit to receive his BFA from Wayne State University and naturally fell in amongst the revolutionary artistic crowd of the Cass Corridor. Chatelain’s work flourished in the creative environment of the late ’60s, and he was one of the first artists to assist in the founding of the artist-run Willis Gallery, and subsequently had three solo shows there in 1972, 1973, and 1976. Chatelain’s work has ranged from hard-edged abstract works to more dark, somber portraits and figures with the subdued hues characteristic of the Cass Corridor. Chatelain continues to exhibit his work in the Detroit area as well as in galleries in New York.
