DescriptionStraight out of Detroit with a plethora of influences ranging from Miles Davis to Jimi Hendrix, James Carter burst onto the jazz scene at an early age, touring Europe with the International Jazz Band at sixteen years of age. A few years later in 1988, Carter was asked to be a guest musician for legendary trumpeter Lester Bowie at a performance at the Detroit Institute of Arts, and the two soon met up to collaborate on Bowie’s upcoming jazz album The Organizer. At Bowie’s invitation Carter joined his quartet and was launched into the New York limelight, releasing his first album JC on the Set soon after at age twenty-three. Most prominently known for his skills as a saxophonist, Carter also plays bass clarinet and the flute. He has performed with several famous orchestras and musicians, including the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Aretha Franklin, Ginger Baker, and the late Julius Hemphill. Carter has received several critics and reader’s choice awards for his music, and was awarded in 2004 the Dr. Alaine Locke Award for preserving and promoting African-American culture.
