DescriptionA brilliant art historian with a discerning eye for Detroit art, Dennis Nawrocki is an enlightened expert in the realm of the Cass Corridor art scene. Nawrocki was in the midst of the Cass Corridor community while obtaining his first MA from Wayne State University, and gained exclusive insight into the works he calls “Detroit’s first avant-garde.” His expertise in museology led him across the nation, curating collections in San Francisco, Chicago, and Ann Arbor before returning to his roots in Detroit. Nawrocki joined the faculty of the College for Creative Studies as the director of exhibitions in addition to teaching courses in modern and contemporary art history. After his retirement from the College for Creative Studies, Nawrocki remained as an adjunct professor at Wayne State University in order to spread his vast knowledge amongst a new generation of students. Nawrocki’s book, Art in Detroit Public Places, stands as a definitive guide to the unique sculptures and paintings that enhance Detroit. Nawrocki’s generosity has further expanded the understanding of the Cass Corridor with his contribution of over 35 works of art from his private collection to the Wayne State University Art Collection, with work from Detroit artists such as Jim Chatelain, Nancy Mitchnick, Kurt Novak, Nancy Pletos, Gilda Snowden, and Robert Sestok.
