Description“Pink Garden” was part of an exhibition series titled As Above So Below that was a culminating show for Kline’s residency at Wayne State University. This series of paintings references Persian fables and further develops on themes from her earlier series Chahar Baagh, which was a diasporic exploration of her Iranian heritage expressed in gardenscapes and dreamlike figures. Kline’s style in this series highlights her Californian influence from which defining aesthetics such as vibrant, saccharine colors and the conflation of exterior/interior space can be attributed to artists like Richard Diebenkorn and David Hockney. Kline describes “Pink Garden” as representing a surreal, joyful memory of the garden in her father’s house. She chose a dominance of the color pink to accomplish a disorienting atmosphere of “hope and beauty.”Kimia Kline graduate with a MFA in painting from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2011. She currently lives in Brooklyn, working as a practicing artist and a curator for the Wythe Hotel. Kline’s work is heavily influenced by her Iranian heritage and her time spent in India.
