double memory
in the caves, inland, we transfix
on the blind lizards: newt-like,
encapsulated, delicate as infants,
their gills reminders of origins,
their sight of the sea. darkness
does not surprise them, they move,
have grown fine feathery antennae,
the exquisite spines show white
through cold, glasslike flesh: we,
gifted, swim in with our ghosts.
