DescriptionLetterpress printed poem by Gloria Dyc

1

a queen bee has stung her heart
left eggs behind
she can feel the white froth
ready to erupt
as she stands on the edge
of the great water
here
this great expanse
a sense of the city as
enclosure
here she feels
the spaces between
she would leave on a ship
as a sailor
in the spaces between
unwelcome thoughts still
hover near her ears
she would sail away
if she could

2
they say the people of africa
will do anything
as a measure against the locusts
when they attack
they have come for thousands of years
there are references to invasions
in the bible
their helplessness is a fever
they beat their white robes
in the air to keep the locusts
from their crops
after a while they can no longer hear the hum
it is as though there is silence
