DescriptionNamed after a clever spirit in West African folklore, Iktomi was commissioned to honor Dr. William R. Keast, WSU president from 1965 – 1971. Dr. Keast served during the turbulence of the 1967 riots and the Vietnam War. Throughout this period he supported student’s rights to free speech, organized faculty to help rebuild the city and furthered Wayne State’s standing as a leading urban university. Alice Smith was born in Birmingham, Alabama. She came to Detroit to study glass at the College for Creative Studies and received an MFA from WSU in 1995.
