DescriptionThe repetition of angles and shapes against an irregular grid marks the struggle between primal instinct and rational science in Paul Schwarz's 1977 work Untitled (Setup II). Composed of enamel, ink, and varnish on wood, the machine-like precision of this piece is punctuated with a deviancy of the complexities of form. The rusty red serves as a stark contrast to the washed-out white, and appears to be surfacing from under its thick application.Paul Schwarz was born and educated in Detroit, attending both the College for Creative Studies and Wayne State University. A member of the Cass Corridor artist's movement, Schwarz held a studio at the Forsythe Building and regularly exhibited his art in surrounding galleries such as the Willis Gallery and the Detroit Artists Market.
