DescriptionTony Gleaton (1948-2015), a Detroit native, worked as a fashion photographer in New York City before beginning a series titled Cowboys: Reconstructing an American Myth, featuring Black and Native American ranch hands and rodeo performers in the 1980s. The photographs in the WSU collection are part of Gleaton’s most famous project, Tengo Casi 500 Años: Africa’s Legacy in Mexico, Central & South America, which represented the descendants of enslaved Africans brought to these regions by Spanish conquistadors in the 16th-18th centuries.
