DescriptionBorn in Detroit in 1948, Tony Gleaton's photographs focus on what he described as 'the others.' Originally working as a fashion photographer in New York, Gleaton left NYC in 1981 to photograph cowboys, primarily Native American and Black ranch hands and rodeo performers. In 1986, he began photographing those of African descent in Latin America. This became his most well-known project, and has been exhibited in the U.S. by the Smithsonian, as well as in Mexico and Cuba by the Mexican National Council of Art.Wayne State University mourns the loss of Tony Gleaton who died on August 14, 2015. His extraordinary talent and generous spirit will always be remembered. A suite of 16 photographs by Gleaton is installed on campus in El Salon de Nuestra Cultura, at the General Lectures Building.
