DescriptionHauptman's polished drawing style is evident even in her more intricate and chaotic compositions. Her ink drawings contain tightly-woven line work, imposing a certain order while haphazard wisps of black ink break from composed form to create meticulous entanglements, evoking a sense of unease apparent in a majority of Hauptman's work.

Michigan native Susan Hauptman received her BFA from the University of Michigan in 1968, thereafter moving to Detroit and completing her MFA at Wayne State University in 1970. Since completing her advanced degree, Hauptman has taken part in solo exhibitions at venues such as the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the Yale University Art Museum. Her work is also included in the collections of the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, the Lee Grant of New York, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
