DescriptionBlending the mediums of oil painting and collage, Cubos is a highly abstract and geometric work of art. While the striking and bold colors catch the eye of the viewer, the thick paint application in the yellow areas and the visible streaks through the maroon at the top give the composition lots of depth and space to look into.

Andrea Belag’s work often displays an interest in the sensual aspects of painting, the movement of the act and the tactile experience the viewers get as they look at a canvas. This is no less true here, as Cubos plays with the overlaying of sharp and curved shapes, texture of paint and on the canvas, and the sharp contrasts felt by the eye going from bright whites and yellows to deep reds and blacks.

With a distinctly modernist style in the vein of Henri Matisse or Georgia O'Keeffe, Andrea Belag paints with abstract shapes and textural paint. Belag is a New York artist, who studied at Boston University and Bard College, before becoming a faculty member of the School of Visual Arts New York. She spends most of her time painting in New York, and has exhibited extensively over the course of her career since the 1980s.
