DescriptionThis square canvas shows a very geometric and abstract design mostly using neutral beige and silvery white colors but with a few large swatches of red filling some of, what might otherwise be seen as, the negative space between the lines that crisscross around the canvas. The red slashes that dominate the canvas act like the silhouettes of fish viewed from above swimming and following the lines of water rippling above. In the swatches of color and lines that act as barriers, there is something similar to the work of Piet Mondrian’s later work like Tableau I. However Lewis’ image with has more freeform strokes and gives the piece a distinctively post-WWII disposition that sets it apart from similar works in previous decades of art history.
