DescriptionBorn in Detroit in 1914, Tony Spina graduated from the Detroit Institute of Technology. Spina worked as a photographer for the Detroit Free Press for 44 years, and served as chief photographer for 38 of those years. He won hundreds of award internationally, and received a Pulitzer Prize for the work he did covering the Detroit riots of 1968. Although he is known for his work as a photojournalist, this image of man caring for the clock in Wayne State University’s Old Main’s tower is an intimate scene that shows the versatility and diversity Spina had as a photographer.
